About a year ago, I worked at a new/used computer store. More specifically, it had a large "new" inventory, which was used to operate as a standard computer store, and it had an upstairs, which was where the magic happened. Upstairs was my domain. That's where I made my slackware-powered cash registers, compiler clusters, video walls, audio-video systems, and my mamelet.
It wasn't mine exclusively: I was working with a seattle's best barista as my protege. He had the carpentry skills, and I had the software skills, to pull it off: the creation of a half-sized arcade cabinet, using a 15" monitor instead of a TV. The weird part, though, was that he actually did it. We found some plywood, sketched out our pieces with a sharpie, sawed them out, and screwed it all together. We stole a mirror off a wall in an inventory room to flip the monitor's image, just like a real arcade cabinet, and in the end it worked really well. We bought some used arcade machine joysticks from a store called john's jukes for $10 each, and I hacked together a joystick, a usb gamepad and SDL, to make joystick pushes generate X key input events, and then ran xmame fullscreen with the video flipped to look correct in the mirror.
Then I stopped working there, and last I heard they threw it away. I really doubt there's going to be any news on this project, unless I get my act together and do it all over again.
I had a full set of construction pictures, but they were on my old cellphone, which snapped in half, and was then thrown away by the motorola service guys when I asked them to put a new lcd on it. Thanks guys, you did a fantastic job.
