I think that starcraft is a terrific game. It's well balanced and very strategic, yes, but it's also graphically consistent, creative and pleasing. I am going to try to create a starcraft clone in javascript/dhtml/dom/etc, similar in nature to dhtml lemmings in that the gameplay will hopefully be an exact duplication. If you've taken a look at qmsn3, you can tell that I don't move on until I perfect what I've got, so I'm going to start with a google maps-like widget called openlayers (because it's lightweight) and add on from there.
I don't like the navigation of starcraft though (smacking the edge of the screen with your cursor). I know I'm supposed to use the arrow keys or click on the minimap directly, but I smack the edge of the screen with my cursor, which isn't easy to trap in javascript. Therefore I'm going to make one main alteration (aside from the lack of audio, story, battlenet, campaign, and possibly ai) and try to give it a little bit of google earth's navigation simplicity. Keep in mind, however, that I'm not even sure what I mean by that.
